Best Locations for a Lifestyle Photoshoot in Key West
If you’ve ever dreamed of capturing sun-kissed memories surrounded by turquoise waters and palm-lined streets, Key West is the place to do it. As a lifestyle photographer based right here on the island, I’ve explored every corner — from pastel streets to hidden beaches — and found the most magical spots for authentic, light-filled photos.
Whether you’re celebrating love, family, or just the joy of island living, here are my favorite Key West locations for lifestyle photoshoots that perfectly blend natural beauty with that easy tropical vibe.
1. Smathers Beach — Golden Hour Perfection
Smathers Beach is one of my go-to spots for couples and families who love soft sand, ocean breeze, and dreamy sunset light. The wide beach and tall palms give plenty of space to move naturally, and during golden hour, everything glows in warm, golden tones — perfect for barefoot, carefree moments.
2. Old Town & Truman Annex — Historic Charm & Tropical Elegance
If you love architecture, texture, and that timeless island charm, Old Town is your place. Its pastel conch houses, lush greenery, and vintage porches make every corner photo-worthy. Walking along streets like Olivia, Petronia, or Whitehead feels like stepping into a living postcard. Within Old Town lies Truman Annex, one of the most photogenic areas on the island — quiet streets, white picket fences, and palm-lined walkways that feel like a storybook.

3. Fort Zachary Taylor State Park — Nature Meets Ocean Drama
Fort Zachary Taylor (or “Fort Zach,” as locals call it) is one of the most versatile photography locations in Key West. You’ll find a mix of rocky coastline, tall pines, historic fort walls, and turquoise water — all in one place. It’s a photographer’s playground for anyone who loves variety.
The sunsets here are next-level — warm, golden light reflecting off the water, perfect for romantic or adventurous lifestyle sessions.
💡 Photographer Tip: Ft. Zachary requires a photography permit or fee for professional shoots, since it’s part of a Florida state park. It’s absolutely worth it for the variety and views, but plan ahead to arrange the permit before your session.
4. Higgs Beach & West Martello Tower — Coastal Beauty & Floral Magic
Higgs Beach is another favorite for that soft, breezy Key West energy. Its white pier, rows of palms, and pastel-blue water create the perfect backdrop for easy, natural portraits. It’s especially beautiful during sunrise when the light is gentle and colors are muted.
Next door sits the West Martello Tower & Key West Garden Club, a hidden gem filled with tropical flowers, arches, and romantic greenery. It’s perfect for garden-inspired portraits or couples who love a touch of old-world charm mixed with ocean air.

💡 Photographer Tip: West Martello requires a photography fee or permit, but Higgs Beach itself is free and open to the public. The two locations are steps apart, so you can easily combine both in one session.
5. Casa Marina Area — Elegant Tropical Aesthetic
The Casa Marina area offers a more polished, resort-style look with tall palms, soft sand, and clean, minimal architecture. The vibe is elevated yet relaxed — perfect for couples who want “barefoot luxury” photos or branding clients looking for a timeless coastal backdrop.
💡 Photographer Tip: Because Casa Marina is private resort property, it does require a photography fee or permit, but it’s one of the most stunning and exclusive Key West backdrops for those who want something refined.
✨ A Photographer’s Note
Each Key West location tells its own story — from the carefree energy of Smathers Beach to the timeless architecture of Old Town, the lush romance of West Martello, and the elegance of Casa Marina.
When I photograph lifestyle sessions here, I focus on connection and atmosphere — the way the light moves, the wind plays, and the laughter flows. These aren’t just locations; they’re little pieces of paradise, captured forever.
Dress the Mood, Not the Moment
When planning outfits for a lifestyle session, think about how you want the photos to feel, not just what you’ll wear. Lifestyle photography captures connection and personality — so comfort and movement matter more than formality.
Here’s how to nail it:
• Coordinate, don’t match. Pick a color palette (think soft neutrals, warm earth tones, or ocean-inspired hues for Key West) and mix textures and layers within it.
• Flow and movement. Flowy dresses, linen shirts, and loose pants photograph beautifully in motion — especially in the breeze by the beach or park.
• Avoid distractions. Skip large logos, neon colors, or tight synthetic fabrics — they draw attention away from emotion.
• Think barefoot vibes. Especially for beach or home sessions — relaxed looks feel more genuine.
• Add story details. Hats, a blanket, sunglasses, or a woven bag add personality and can help with natural posing.
