An Insider’s Guide from a Local Photographer

There’s something undeniably special about Key West. From its charming historic streets and tropical gardens to turquoise waters and breathtaking sunsets, this little island is filled with beautiful places to create lasting memories.

Whether you’re celebrating an engagement, enjoying a family vacation, expecting a little one, or simply wanting to preserve a special chapter of life, choosing the right location can make your photography experience even more meaningful.

As a Key West wedding and portrait photographer, I’ve had the opportunity to capture beautiful stories throughout the island. Each location has its own character, atmosphere, and light, and I love helping my clients find a setting that feels true to them.

Here are some of my favorite locations for couples, engagements, families, maternity, and portrait photography in Key West.

01. Fort Zachary Taylor State Park

Romantic Coastlines & Beautiful Sunsets

If you’re dreaming of romantic beach photographs surrounded by natural beauty, Fort Zachary Taylor State Park is one of my favorite locations in Key West.

With its turquoise waters, rocky shoreline, tropical greenery, and beautiful sunsets, this location offers a wonderful variety of natural backdrops.

I especially love the textures of the rocks, the movement of the water, and the soft light during golden hour. Together, they create an atmosphere that feels intimate, romantic, and effortlessly timeless.

Fort Zachary Taylor is particularly beautiful for couples who want a more natural, cinematic setting rather than a traditional sandy beach. It’s also a lovely choice for maternity portraits and relaxed family sessions.

Perfect for: Couples, engagements, anniversaries, maternity, and families.

Best time: Late afternoon and golden hour, depending on park hours.

My photography tip: The rocky shoreline adds beautiful texture and depth to photographs. I love incorporating the surrounding landscape into wide, editorial compositions while also capturing intimate moments between couples.

Please note: Park admission fees and photography permit requirements may apply. Clients are responsible for confirming requirements and arranging any necessary permissions.

Soft Sand, Palm Trees & Coastal Romance

For those who love the classic tropical beauty of Key West, Smathers Beach is a wonderful choice.

The open scenery allows the natural beauty of the island to become part of your story without overwhelming the photographs.

I especially love Smathers Beach for couples who want barefoot portraits by the ocean and families who enjoy a more playful, relaxed experience.

There’s plenty of space for walking along the shoreline, holding hands, laughing together, and capturing those little in-between moments that make photographs feel genuine.

My photography tip: The palm trees and open shoreline provide beautiful opportunities for relaxed, natural photographs with a timeless coastal feel.

03. Truman Annex

Timeless Architecture & Editorial Elegance

If you’re drawn to elegant architecture, charming pathways, and a more editorial photography style, Truman Annex is one of my favorite areas in Key West.

This beautiful neighborhood offers a completely different atmosphere from the beach.

I especially love the contrast between the architectural details and the softness of natural light.

It’s a wonderful choice for couples who want a combination of candid, romantic moments and thoughtfully composed portraits.

Truman Annex also works beautifully for solo portraits, senior sessions, and small families.

Perfect for: Couples, engagements, anniversaries, solo portraits, and families.

Best time: Morning or late afternoon, depending on the light.

My photography tip: Architectural details, pathways, and greenery create beautiful natural framing opportunities that give photographs a refined, editorial quality.

Please note: Some areas are private or have photography restrictions. Any required access arrangements must be confirmed in advance.

04. Historic Old Town Key West

Charming Streets & Authentic Island Character

One of the things I love most about Key West is its unique character.

Historic Old Town is filled with colorful architecture, charming homes, tropical greenery, white picket fences, and beautiful little corners that make every photography session feel special.

Unlike a traditional beach session, photographing in Old Town allows us to incorporate the personality and history of Key West into your images.

I love the combination of romantic streets, architectural details, and lush greenery.

This setting is particularly beautiful for couples who enjoy walking together, exploring charming streets, and creating photographs that feel natural and spontaneous.

It’s also a wonderful option for solo portraits, senior sessions, and lifestyle photography.

Coastal Charm Meets Historic Key West

For couples who love the charm of historic Key West and the romance of the waterfront, Key West Bight Marina and nearby Lane Street offer a beautiful combination of scenery.

With sailboats, waterfront views, charming architecture, and tropical surroundings, this area provides a wonderful variety of backdrops within a short walking distance.

I especially love the contrast between the coastal atmosphere of the marina and the intimate character of the nearby streets.

06. Key West Garden Club

Romantic Gardens & Tropical Elegance

For those who love lush greenery, romantic gardens, and a more intimate atmosphere, the Key West Garden Club is a beautiful setting.

Located at the historic West Martello Tower, this tropical garden offers winding pathways, beautiful plants, historic stone structures, and charming architectural details.

The combination of greenery and historic surroundings creates a romantic atmosphere that feels almost like a secret garden.

I especially love this setting for couples who prefer a softer, more intimate aesthetic.

Please note: Professional photography may require advance approval or additional fees. Clients are responsible for making the necessary arrangements directly with the venue.

07. In-Home Photography Sessions

Intimate, Personal & Beautifully Yours

Not every beautiful photography session needs an ocean view or a picture-perfect backdrop.

Sometimes, the most meaningful photographs are created in the comfort of your own home.

In-home photography sessions offer a relaxed, intimate setting where genuine moments can unfold naturally.

Whether you’re welcoming a new baby, celebrating motherhood, documenting everyday family life, or simply wanting photographs that feel personal and authentic, your home can provide a beautiful backdrop for your story.

I especially love the simplicity of these sessions—the quiet interactions, natural connections, and little details that make your space uniquely yours.

With beautiful window light, thoughtful compositions, and a relaxed documentary-inspired approach, we can create timeless photographs without ever leaving home.

Perfect for: Maternity, newborn lifestyle, families, motherhood, couples, and personal portraits.

My photography tip: Rooms with large windows and soft natural light are ideal, but your home doesn’t need to look perfect. The focus is always on the people, their connections, and the moments that matter most.

⸻

08. Photography Permits & Location Fees

What to Know Before Choosing Your Location

While Key West offers many beautiful places for photography, some locations require photography permits, advance approval, admission fees, or additional location fees for professional photography.

Locations such as Fort Zachary Taylor State Park, the Key West Garden Club and certain private hotels and resorts may have specific photography policies and requirements.

These requirements can vary depending on the property and type of session.

Clients are responsible for contacting the location directly to obtain any required permissions, making the necessary arrangements, and paying all applicable permit, admission, or location fees. These fees are separate from my photography collections and are not included in the session price.

I recommend confirming the requirements with your chosen location before booking your session there. If you need help exploring alternative locations, I’m always happy to offer suggestions that complement your vision.

⸻

09. Sunrise vs. Sunset: When Is the Best Time for Photos in Key West?

Choosing the right location is important, but beautiful light can make an equally meaningful difference.

As a natural-light photographer, I love working during the softer hours of the day, when the light creates a romantic and timeless atmosphere.

Sunrise Photography

Sunrise sessions can be wonderful for couples and families who prefer a quieter, more peaceful experience.

The temperatures are often more comfortable, popular locations may be less crowded, and the soft morning light creates a beautiful atmosphere.

Sunrise can be especially lovely for beach sessions.

Sunset Photography

Sunset is one of my favorite times to photograph in Key West.

The warm light, beautiful skies, and romantic atmosphere create a wonderful setting for intimate couples portraits and relaxed family photographs.

However, not every location receives the same sunset light, so choosing the right setting is just as important as choosing the time.

Which Should You Choose?

There isn’t one perfect answer.

The best time depends on your preferred location, the type of session you’re planning, and the atmosphere you want to create.

I’ll help you choose the best time based on the light, location, and your vision.

10. Which Key West Photoshoot Location Is Right for You?

Every location offers something different, and the best choice is the one that reflects your personality and story.

For romantic beach photographs: Fort Zachary Taylor or Smathers Beach.

For elegant, editorial portraits: Truman Annex.

For charming, lifestyle-inspired photographs: Historic Old Town.

For romantic waterfront scenery: Key West Bight Marina & Lane Street.

For tropical gardens and greenery: Key West Garden Club.

For intimate, personal photographs: An in-home session.

For families with young children: Smathers Beach, an in-home session, or another comfortable and accessible location.

For maternity photography: A peaceful beach, tropical garden, or the comfort of your own home.

You don’t have to choose your location alone.

I’ll help you find a beautiful setting that complements your vision while considering lighting, accessibility, and the type of photographs you’d love to create.

⸻

11. Can We Visit More Than One Location?

Absolutely, depending on the collection you choose, the distance between locations, and the time available.

Some of my favorite galleries combine different settings, such as charming historic streets followed by romantic beach portraits.

This creates a beautiful variety of photographs while telling a more complete story of your time in Key West.

For shorter sessions, I typically recommend focusing on one location so we can make the most of our time together without feeling rushed.

For longer sessions, we may be able to incorporate two nearby locations when time allows.

⸻

12. A Few Tips Before Your Key West Photoshoot

Once you’ve chosen your location, a little preparation can make your photography experience even more enjoyable.

I recommend choosing outfits that complement the surroundings, wearing comfortable shoes when walking between locations, and allowing plenty of time to arrive without feeling rushed.

Most importantly, come ready to enjoy the experience.

You don’t need to know how to pose or worry about creating perfect moments.

I’ll offer gentle guidance when needed while allowing genuine connections, laughter, and natural interactions to unfold.
